Job Summary: Zoo Atlanta’s Elephant Team, part of the Mammal Department, currently cares for 2.2 African elephants and meerkats. In 2019, Zoo Atlanta opened the new African Savanna, which includes a state-of-the-art elephant facility and an expanding elephant program. Animal keepers are responsible for animal welfare and husbandry, including training and enrichment. Additionally, animal keepers are responsible for maintenance of habitats, holdings, and public areas as assigned. The Keeper I, II, and III will report to the area managers and should be willing to serve as a possible point person in the absence of managers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, SKILLS, AND RESPONSIBILITES:

Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s strategic plan, mission and values, and work with all zoo staff to support these plans.
Maintain a high-performance level of excellent animal care.
Participate in and support collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research, and education.
Complete behavioral management training provided by Zoo Atlanta and utilize operant conditioning and enrichment techniques.
Complete animal welfare training provided by Zoo Atlanta, participate in animal welfare assessments, and contribute to follow-through on animal welfare action items when necessary.
Effectively monitor health and behavior of the animal collection and communicate changes to supervisor and veterinary staff. Oversee administration of medications as applicable.
Actively support and implement area policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care for the collection and the safety of staff and guests.
Maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures.
Use positive interpersonal skills to form and maintain professional relationships within the work environment.
Maintain a high-performance level of guest interactions including scheduled on-ground talks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior elephant experience and/or related exotic animal care experience is required.

Keeper II

- A minimum of 3 years prior related, paid animal care experience is required. Paid experience at an AZA accredited facility is preferred.
Keeper III
- Prior elephant experience and/or related exotic animal care experience is required.
- A minimum of 5 years prior, related, paid animal care experience is required. Paid experience at an AZA accredited facility is greatly preferred.

EDUCATION:

Four-year degree in biology, psychology, or related field is preferred; sufficient relevant experience will be considered.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:

Must obtain and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with a safe driving record.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and have the physical ability to routinely perform strenuous work.
After being properly trained, all keepers working with, or around dangerous animals must be able to carry and utilize OC spray.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Animal Care Seasonal employee performs routine work assignments involving the care of Zoo & Aquarium animals, as well as maintenance of habitats, enclosures, service areas, and animal holding areas. This position performs related work, as required.

This position will work with the Elephant Team, which is responsible for the daily husbandry of African elephants.

This is a seasonal position, working 40 hours a week, beginning the end of February and potentially running through early September. Seasonal start and end dates can vary based upon individual availability and team needs

POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Wildlife Care Supervisor is responsible for and oversees all aspects of the welfare, safe care, and handling of an assigned wildlife collection and contributes to collection strategic planning. WHAT YOU WILL DO

Lead, manage, evaluate, and develop the performance of animal care staff as assigned and resolve conflicts in a timely and appropriate manner.
Frequently inspect and observe assigned collection for overall health and welfare.
Evaluate, adjust, and coordinate husbandry standards and techniques applied to an assigned animal collection according to a zoological master plan.
Ensure the wildlife welfare standards are upheld and improved upon where necessary according to the organizations Wildlife Welfare Policy.
Ensure proper communication with the Veterinary Team on medical cases and health status of animals within assigned areas.
Ensure use of appropriate wildlife handling, shipment, management and training methodologies for the collection.
Represent the leadership and the animal care divisions in partnership with operations.
Effectively lead their assigned team by providing the support and guidance that enables each team member to be empowered and successful.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

JOB EXPERIENCE

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES:

Exceptional communication skills
Demonstrated experience with communication technology and relevant software (Zoom, Teams, etc.).
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite to include Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel
Bilingual (Spanish) ideal but not required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Summary:
The responsibility of this position is to maintain and care for elephants and other assigned species; to assist veterinary staff as needed; and to perform a variety of activities relative to the assigned area of responsibility.

Qualifications:

Behavioral Training

Management

Maintains live plants within enclosures ensuring neat, attractive exhibits.
Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance as necessary.

Education and Experience

One year of experience in animal care in a zoo setting or under the direction of a licensed veterinarian is required, which may be gained through internships, volunteer experience, or employment.
Extensive domestic animal experience may qualify for substitution for exotic animal management experience.
Specific training and work experience in other settings, such as aquaculture, schools, nature centers, agricultural operations, or conservation centers may be considered on a case-by-case basis as fulfillment for the experience requirements.

The Elephant Caregiver is a member of the elephant husbandry team providing quality daily care, social and herd opportunity, nutrition, and treatments using Protected Contact and Positive Reinforcement for aging African and Asian elephants housed at The Sanctuary. Caregivers play an important role in maintaining the elephant barns and habitats to provide safe and secure housing.

Position Objectives

Actively participate with The Sanctuary team supporting all aspects of daily and year-round elephant and facility care.

Ensure best possible wellness practices to meet the changing health and social needs of elephants as they age. Prepare for and manage end of life palliative care and ensure quality of life.

Manage seasonal elephant care requirements to the best of our ability.

Employ “Protected Contact” best practice elephant management through Positive Reinforcement.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Elephant Care

Safely and efficiently work directly with elephants to effectively provide daily care in barns and habitats.

Prepare and provide daily diets and medications in accordance with animal care protocols and related safety guidelines.

Observe and interpret elephant behavior and diet consumption, report significant changes. Adapt with seasonal changes and elephant health status.

Develop proficiency in implementation of treatment(s), foot care, and preventative care in collaboration with the Veterinary team.

Promote elephant autonomy, social opportunity, and herd building dynamics.

Assist in the procurement, preparation and delivery of browse, and other forms of enrichment.

Provide husbandry training support for elephants to maintain and teach behaviors required to meet elephant program objectives.

Prepare for and manage geriatric and end of life elephant care circumstances.

Facilities & Supplies

Monitor, inspect and maintain elephant and safety infrastructure (e.g., barns, fence, gates) and report breakage/failures in a timely manner to supervisor.

Provide daily cleaning and upkeep of elephant facilities, including barns, service areas, habitats, and other related infrastructure.

Implement seasonal procedural changes for barn and habitat management, as directed.

Ensure work areas, access, parking, and offices are cleaned and maintained daily in a safe, neat, and orderly fashion.

Assist in unloading and storage of feed and hay deliveries.

Monitor and maintain feed and husbandry supplies. Order supplies as needed and requested.

Perform daily basic maintenance safety checks on vehicles and equipment; report as requested.

Safety

Understand and participate with all assigned safety training protocols for The Sanctuary and department.

Safely operate ATVs, vehicles and equipment on roads, trails and in habitats, per established protocols.

Perform elephant care tasks in accordance with existing safety guidelines; maintain constant awareness of elephants and co-worker proximity.

Participate in elephant escape, elephant down, and other emergency training protocols as requested.

Administrative / Other

Maintain daily animal care and observation logs and record keeping.

Adhere to weekly schedules for both daily animal care and night feedings, as weather requires.

Actively participate in barn meetings to ensure daily goals are understood and met.

Monitor Ele-cam location and provide appropriate reporting.

Represent The Elephant Sanctuary in internal and local community and public events as required.
